In 1949 the famous "Eames House" was built. In the same year his future wife, Ray, was enrolled at the university, and both married a year later. In 1940 he took over the management of the department for industrial design at the university. In 1939, Charles taught "design" at the Cranbrook Academy of Art, Michigan, after receiving a scholarship for this university a year earlier. Walsh, another studio for architecture followed in 1935. There he studied architecture at the local Washington University and opened his first architectural office in 1930. 6 years later, recyclable polypropylene was used for the production of the seat shells and the production of plastic chairs was resumed. For environmental reasons, Vitra abandoned the further use of the material and stopped production. Until 1993, the seat shells of the chairs were made of polyester resin. In 1957 the manufacturer Vitra from Wheil am Rhein took over the production of plastic chairs in Europe. These were finally the first plastic chairs, which were manufactured in series. Two years later, in 1948, the first designs of the Plastic Side Chair were held for the "Low Cost Furniture Design" competition at the Museum of Modern Art, New York. There, the furniture designed by Charles and Ray was made of bended wood. The production of the first designs goes back to the year 1946 and to the production plant of Herman Miller in Zeeland, Michigan.
